Keep a Journal

I’ve never been one to keep a journal. However, one of my goals for 2021 has been to start recording my thoughts in one. The catalyst was the need to get out of my own head. There’s something about telling someone or something what’s going on in-between your ears that’s really cathartic and anxiety reducing. While a pen and paper journal would do the trick, I’ve gone with the Day One Journal app. I went ahead and paid for the annual subscription so I can keep it on my phone, tablet, and laptop. Having access to it through all my devices has kept me from slacking too much on the habit. I appreciate that the app also lets me add photos, videos, and links. I can also keep multiple journals, so in addition to my daily reflections journal I also have one for ideas and random thoughts. I also enjoy the templates feature which allows me to pre-set some prompts for each day, if I want. One template I have setup offers three prompts for the day:

  • I will focus on…
  • I am grateful for…
  • I will let go of…

One of my rules around journaling that I hope keeps me in the habit is that, while my goal is to journal everyday, I don’t beat myself up for missing a day. I haven’t journaled every day, but I’ve done it most days, so far. How has journaling been helpful for you?
